During 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. I assumed to book lodging when I arrived, however when I arrived, a major event was taking place and every single backpackers hostels and cheap hotels were fully booked.

Coming from the city-state of Singapore, I thought the possibility of bed down in the terminal – but soon learned the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, does not operate around the clock. With no idea how to proceed and getting a bit desperate, I caught a bus into town and found myself drifting towards the casino, believing I could pass the night in an establishment operating 24/7. That wouldn’t put me in the ideal condition to succeed at an interview the next day, yet, as a broke student, luxury accommodation was impossible.

Our society requires more individuals with such compassion.

Apparently, I appeared out of place because a woman spotted me loitering in the city and wondered whether I needed help. I shared my predicament and immediately she said I could sleep on the floor at her university residence at the Australian National University – a perfect solution, as that’s where my interview was the following day. She even offered some food: one filled rolls she had taken home her evening job. I was able to use warm shower facilities and somewhere safe and secure to sleep.

Looking back, I now understand what a big chance she accepted as a young woman letting a guy who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. Back then I existed within my own unawareness and not even thinking to such safety concerns. As a dad now, it astounds me she took that chance – yet deeply appreciative.

I didn’t end up go to ANU, and I didn’t meet her again, but her act remains etched in my mind that incredible gesture of kindness. It is my wish the universe has repaid her generosity abundantly. We could all use more people with such compassion.
