California's Governor Acknowledges He Is Evaluating a White House Bid in 2028
Gavin Newsom, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he intends to determine whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 midterm elections conclude.
"Absolutely, I would be lying if I said no," Newsom remarked when asked about contemplating a White House bid after the 2026 ballots. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I'm not."
The governor's time in office as California's leader wraps up in the start of 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. Yet, he emphasized that any choice is a long way off.
"Fate will determine that," he said.
Increased Visibility as a Administration Opponent
He has stepped forward as a high-profile opponent of the Trump administration, employing his online platforms and advocating for a proposition that would expand Democratic House seats in response to Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has drawn criticism from political opponents.
Clash on Transportation
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor does not care about the state's residents in a recent segment on a major news network. The secretary announced intentions to pull government money from California and warned revoking the power to grant trucking licenses.
"I intend to cut $160 million from the state," he said, after a recent tragic collision in California involving an non-citizen commercial driver that resulted in loss of life and injured individuals.
His administration noted that the national authorities had reauthorized the driver's employment repeatedly, which allowed him to secure a trucking license under national regulations.
The transportation secretary had earlier stated he was withholding $40m from the state for not enforcing linguistic standards for CDL holders.
Firm Rebuttal from the Administration
"Ex-reality TV personality, now Secretary of Transportation, continues to misunderstand federal law," Newsom's office said in a previous comment countering the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, in contrast to this person, we focus on reality: California CDL holders had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the sole state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate substantially higher than California. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."
Voter Sentiment and Campaign Considerations
A recently conducted study revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and 48% of all registered voters believed that Newsom must consider running for president in 2028. Since Trump took office, public support for the governor has increased to an mean of 33.5% from around 30%, while his negative ratings has decreased from an typical level of previous highs to current figures.
In previous months, the governor remarked while on a trip several key regions that he had "no idea" about his plans for the next presidential election.
He noted his past difficulties, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.
"The notion that a individual who scored 960 on the SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, amazing," he said. "Who the hell knows? I await who presents themselves in the next election and who answers the call. And that is the issue for the American people."
