Chicago White Sox Sign Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on an Substantial Two-Year Agreement.

In a major move for their retooling roster, the American League club have signed infielder Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a $34 million contract bringing in the accomplished player.

Deal Structure and Player Perks

The agreement features a $1 million signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, combined with salaries of $16M for the upcoming season and seventeen million for the 2027 year.

Notably, Murakami's final-year pay may grow based on performance achievements in 2026:

  • A seven-figure bonus for being named the league MVP award.
  • Half a million dollars for placing second or third in MVP voting.
  • $250K for finishing fourth through 10th.
  • An identical bonus for earning the top rookie honor.

The agreement provides that he will not be optioned to the minor leagues without his consent and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the deal. Further benefits include a team-provided interpreter and travel costs between the U.S. and Japan.

Compensation and Franchise History

As part of the acquisition, Chicago must pay a compensation payment of roughly $6.58 million to the Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's professional league. The Swallows are also entitled to a supplemental fee of 15% triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami is set to become the fourth Japanese-born to represent the Chicago franchise, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu once managed Murakami during their time in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a left-side batter who will turn 26 soon, enters a promising lineup in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are finished with a last-place season, finishing last in the American League Central but representing a 19-game improvement from the year before campaign.

A two-time league MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is renowned for a historic 2022 season where he hit 56 homers, eclipsing the all-time record for a Japanese-born player previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to secure Japan's coveted Triple Crown.

His most recent NPB campaign was shortened to just 56 appearances due to an oblique injury. Despite striking out 64 times, he still managed .273 with 22 home runs and 47 runs batted in.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has posted a .270 career batting average with 246 homers, 647 RBI, and 977 Ks in nearly 900 games. Initially playing primarily at first, he has more recently played to third.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's heroics were on full display during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he hit a walk-off double that brought home teammates for a dramatic 6-5 win. The following day in the final against the United States, he blasted a equalizing homer in the second inning, setting the stage for Japan's subsequent 3-2 victory.

The power hitter is set to be formally introduced at a media availability on the coming Monday.
