Food Benefits Set to End for 41 Million Amid Continuing US Government Shutdown

Federal agriculture authorities stated recently that monthly food benefits through a critical national support systems will not be distributed next month amid the persistent government funding lapse.

Impasse Persists Through Its Third Week

The funding lapse lasted nearly a month as officials revealed the news, coming after appeals by more than two hundred Congressional Democrats urging the department to tap into contingency funds to pay for the upcoming nutrition payments.

“The reality is, resources are exhausted,” the department confirmed. “Now, there will be no benefits issued” beginning in November.

Widespread Impact

More than 41 million individuals count on the regular assistance, per the USDA. Some regions, such as one southwestern state, dependence on SNAP reaches a significant portion of citizens.

A memo obtained by a major news agency indicated that federal authorities decided against using contingency funding for November food benefits.

Partisan Impasse

Republicans and Democrats continue to disagree over how to support and resume government operations.

Remarks from the head of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities indicated that the administration had chances to prepare in advance to avoid interruption in payments.

“It could have, and should have acted weeks ago to be prepared to use these funds,” the statement continued. “Rather, it may choose not to use them in an effort to gain political advantage” as Republicans seek to pressure Senate Democrats to support a funding package that would resume the federal government.

States Prepare

State leaders from two affected states declared states of emergency in recent days to free up resources for hunger relief expecting nutrition assistance payments stopping in November.
