Hamilton Island, a Iconic Tropical Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by American Private Equity Firm.
A major tropical holiday destination located on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based private equity firm in a deal reportedly valued at A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to build on the vision and dedication that the family owners has established in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
Details of the Sale
The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family, subject to customary regulatory approvals.
The sellers issued a comment noting they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island spans over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly 30% of the area is built upon, including a substantial range of facilities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a commercial airport
The resort is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, sustaining a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a wide network of local partners, vendors, and area businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The deceased Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and vintner, first bought the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that housed domestic holidaymakers from the outback and southern states.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in multiple countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
