Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
In a statement, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
