A group of six oddball but brave youngsters fall into the trail of a immense and dreadful supernatural darkness that has entered our existence from the farthest reaches of oblivion. They are compelled to spend their lifetimes battling it, facing one nightmare after another in the struggle.

An Echoing Storyline with a Fresh Approach

This outlines the narrative, in essence, of the master of horror’s novel It (his best; undeniable). It is also the plot of King’s son Joe Hill’s recent horror doorstopper, in which a close-knit group invoke the age-old, infinitely malicious beast King Sorrow from the Abyssal Void to help them defeat some villains. Needless to say, their otherworldly invocation backfires.

Acknowledging a Family Heritage

Joe Hill started his career making great efforts to distance himself from his famous father, using the pseudonym he still uses today and eschewing in-person meetings with his agent (he exhibits a uncanny likeness to his parent). Covering a generation, Joe Hill transitions with seamless grace between genres: as the allies attempt to deal with the circumstances they find themselves in by, through diverse methods, choosing undeniably wicked targets to offer up, or seeking means to kill the dragon themselves, we move between thriller to dark fantasy, black-ops torture to romance to horror. One particularly memorable shift was to a heroic journey, within the subterranean depths under the English county, a part tinged by JRR Tolkien that was gloriously terrifying.

A Detailed Mosaic of Fear and Optimism

The novel features trolls – those living under bridges and online ones, genuinely frightening and expertly realized. We see enchanted blades and betrayals, heart-stopping scenes of valor and instances of terrible wickedness, both earthly and supernatural. It stands as a masterpiece: a horror novel that is above all a tribute to the human inventiveness, and to devotion and companionship. “We needed a story to believe and {now we’ve got one|presently we possess it|currently we hold it,” says this character as the friends gather at the table, making preparations to call forth their dragon into existence with the force of their minds.

As Hill puts it in his introductory quote: “Here be dragons”. Do not overlook this.
