Early Sunday, British Transport Police announced the detainment of two men following a multiple knife attacks on a railway carriage in the region. An individual, a British citizen of black heritage aged 32, and a second, a 35-year-old British national with Caribbean roots, were taken into custody. New Guidance to Fight False Claims

In August, new guidelines were rolled out to tackle the spread of misinformation on social media, which had escalated after the tragic murder of three schoolgirls in Southport last summer.

However, advocates have raised concerns that this approach could unintentionally encourage an overemphasis on the ethnicity of those accused and fuel further extremist narratives when details are withheld with the general population.

Dal Babu, who worked in the Metropolitan Police, described the need for law enforcement to reveal the ethnicity of individuals in cases involving ethnic minorities as an "unintended consequence".

“When the new guidance was issued, I warned that there was a danger that there will be an expectation for police to release information on every single occasion,” he said.

He expressed understanding for his ex-peers in the police, noting that they are “damned if they do and damned if they don’t”. “Pressure mounts due to rampant far-right speculation on social media following significant events, focusing on suspect backgrounds.”

Political Reaction

A Conservative MP, whose constituency includes the area where the train halted, described it “unfortunate” but essential for police to swiftly release the racial identities of those arrested.

“It’s not ideal, but I comprehend the reasons. They essentially have no choice at this point,” he commented, adding that online platforms are used to push agendas, making it vital for police to provide accurate information to counter speculation.

Far-Right Exploitation

Before the police announcement, conservative figures had called for a faster response. As an example, Chris Philp urged for prompt sharing of identity details, while Nigel Farage stated on X that the public needed to know “as soon as possible”.

Moreover, extremist profiles online attempted to exploit the incident. One account named “British Patriot”—boosting thousands of followers—shared an baseless allegation that a knife-wielding man had been shouting “Allahu Akbar”.

The guidance were created by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) in recognition of “public concerns” and to ensure police processes were “effective in today’s fast-paced information era”.

This move came soon after Reform UK accused authorities of hiding the identities and migrant background of individuals charged in a different incident in a UK county.
