No less than 64 individuals died in a law enforcement action against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's past.

Four law enforcement personnel were among those killed during the security mission in the neighborhoods of AlemĂŁo and Penha, government representatives stated. In excess of 80 suspects were arrested.

Violent conflicts commenced when around 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho reacted using gunfire, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, authorities stated.

The United Nations human rights body expressed being "appalled" by the police operation, demanding "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Operation Impact

The area of favelas near the aerial transportation hub is seen as the central command of a major organised crime groups.

State officials said at least 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Dozens of people were wounded, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

The criminal network have been expanding their territory across the Rio state, expanding narcotics distribution networks and control of the hillside favelas.

Local law enforcement said more than 200kg (441lb) of drugs were seized in the operation, together with dozens of firearms.
