Oscar-Nominated Star Diane Ladd, Famed For Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Passes Away at Age 89.

This Oscar-nominated actress the celebrated Diane Ladd left us 89 years old.

This actress, with roles featured Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, passed away at home at her Ojai, California home. The news was announced via an announcement by her daughter, award-winning actress Laura Dern, her daughter.

Her daughter, who performed alongside her mom in various films such as Rambling Rose, called her “my incredible hero as well as my special gift as a mother”, stating that she was present as she died.

“She was the most wonderful daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist as well as compassionate soul that seemed almost dreamlike,” she wrote. “We were blessed to have her. She is now with the angels.”

Initial Roles and Rise to Fame

Ladd’s early career featured supporting roles on television series like Perry Mason while that decade had her appearing with Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.

In the same year, the year 1974, she performed with actress Ellen Burstyn in Scorsese’s acclaimed dramatic comedy Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her acting brought Ladd her initial Oscar nod for best supporting actress.

Later Decades

During the eighties, she appeared in the thriller Black Widow, a suspense story and comedy sequel National Lampoon’s holiday comedy while also joining Alice, a comedy program based on Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

During the next ten years, she earned another supporting actress Oscar nomination for her role in the David Lynch film the movie Wild at Heart where she played the mother of her biological child Laura Dern’s role. The following year she was awarded an additional nod for her role in Rambling Rose which also starred her daughter.

“This movie which Princess Diana selected as her very favorite, and she brought me and Laura to London for a premiere and a party dedicated to us,” Ladd shared about the film Rambling Rose. “And she sat between us, holding both our hands, and weeping, viewing our performance.”

The nineties included parts in humorous films The Cemetery Club reuniting her with Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political story, a satirical film, featuring John Travolta and the film by Alexander Payne the movie Citizen Ruth where she acted as the mother of Dern again. The decade also brought her nominations for Emmy Awards for work in the series Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, the show Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel, a drama.

Partnerships with Her Daughter

She continued to star with her daughter in films blending humor and drama Daddy and Them, a movie, the David Lynch project Inland Empire, a surreal film and White’s dark comedy series the program Enlightened. She additionally starred next to Sandra Bullock in the film 28 Days, Sir Anthony Hopkins in The World’s Fastest Indian, a film and Jennifer Lawrence in Joy.

Her more recent television parts featured the series Ray Donovan and Young Sheldon.

Behind the Camera

Ladd also wrote and helmed the comedy the movie Mrs Munck featuring herself and former husband Bruce Dern. “Bruce is a talented star,” she mentioned. “It was a privilege to guide him in a movie. Actually, I stand as the only woman in history to direct her ex-husband. I often joke: ‘I say ladies, if you seek payback, helm a movie with your ex.’ But I’m only kidding.”

Family Ties

Ladd was also a relative of the great Tennessee Williams, whom she described as “a great influence on my life”.

Back in 2018, doctors misdiagnosed Ladd with a respiratory illness and advised she had just six months to live but she regained full health when her daughter transferred her to a new hospital.

“Should you harness your suffering and prevent it from festering like a sore or something, rather utilize it to investigate, to illuminate the way for yourself and others, then you are succeeding,” Ladd remarked.
