The Duke of York relinquishes his title as York's Duke.
He is surrendering his honors, such as the York's Duke, he has declared in a personal statement.
He has been under mounting scrutiny over his associations with sex offender Epstein, with calls for the Palace to take action against him.
That now seems to have led to the royal deciding to of his own accord give up his designations and to give up participation of the Order of the Garter.
In his announcement he said he continued to "strongly deny the claims against me".
"In talks with the sovereign, and my immediate and extended family, we have concluded the persistent allegations about me take away from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family," said a announcement from him.
"I have opted, as I always have, to put my responsibility to my kin and country first.
"I support my choice five years ago to withdraw from royal engagements.
"With His Majesty's approval, we think I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer hold my honor or the honours which have been conferred upon me. As I have said before, I firmly dispute the accusations against me."
Prince Andrew has faced a range of controversies, among them a lawsuit he resolved with an accuser, questions about his money matters and his association with an suspected foreign agent.
He will remain a prince - but will discontinue to be the Duke of York, a honor granted from his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth.
The prince had already ceased to be a "working royal" and had forfeited the use of his HRH title and no longer participated at official royal events. His status now will be even more reduced.
His ex-wife will be known as Ferguson and no longer the Duchess, but their children will persist to have the title of princesses.
Prince Andrew has faced severe scrutiny over his links with convicted sex offender Epstein, more in recent times featuring doubts about when he had actually severed communication.
In his television appearance, the royal had said that he had ended all links with the financier after they had been photographed together in New York in the end of 2010.
But emails sent in February 2011 later emerged suggesting that the prince had in private stayed in touch with the financier, for example exchanging a communication: "Remain connected and we'll have further interactions soon!"
There had been growing displeasure in Buckingham Palace at the issues that persisted to envelop the royal.
Soon a book released after death by Virginia Giuffre will be published which is likely to draw more attention on his involvement with Virginia Giuffre and Jeffrey Epstein.
