The Young Spinner Earns Unexpected Selection in England's Ashes Team
England have opted for a 12-man squad just 48 hours ahead of the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir earning a unexpected place.
Bashir's inclusion suggests that the tourists will delay until the day of the first Test to decide whether the venue conditions favor a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected group, showing there are no concerns about either pace bowler’s fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with Carse expected to be omitted if the spinner makes the starting XI.
Ground Conditions Favor Seamers
Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an all-seam attack on a ground that has hosted several past matches.
During these matches, the majority of dismissals have been taken by seamers, with only a small number to spin bowling.
Among these spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while all visiting spinners combined have only eight.
On a ground renowned for its speed and carry, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, pledged that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a team relying on fast bowlers remains the more likely choice.
Alternative Choices Considered
There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be brought into the team to offer some spin while additionally bolstering the batting lineup.
But McCullum has opted to stick with Bashir, having stated previously that he would be his first-choice spinner for the series.
In July, Nathan Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” adding that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still England’s best spinner.”
“It is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who haven’t done it in the past in these conditions,” Lyon said of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to let my secrets out so they perform and perform well out here.”
