Unbowed Celtic's manager does not fear dismissal but Celtic fans display anger after loss.
The under-pressure manager insisted he had no concerns about losing his job, claiming, “The team is extremely close to a turnaround,” in the wake of sliding worryingly close to the chopping block with a convincing defeat by Rangers.
A Second-Half Meltdown Results in Old Firm Defeat
The Hoops were in front the visitors at the break but a second-half capitulation allowed Rangers to pull level on points with the current Scottish Premiership champions. The former MLS manager, who was appointed from Columbus Crew, has now been in charge for six defeats in his last eight fixtures.
“There is unity with the board,” stated the manager.
Questioned about the speculation, he replied: “I don’t think about it. I think about finding ways to help my team to improve on the fine details.
Supporters' Anger Outside Parkhead
Hundreds of supporters made their feelings clear – aimed at the dugout and directors – by gathering outside the stadium. Club directors are thought to be considering to re-appoint Martin O’Neill, who enjoyed a successful caretaker period previously, if Nancy departs.
“It’s the results [that leads to pressure]. So this is the situation for the moment. Yet by saying that’s how it is, that is not a sign that I am pessimistic. Absolutely not. My point is we are on the cusp, imminently close to reverse our form.”
“Really, Really Close”
He remains focused on the fact his team play well for one half at a time. In fact, if not for poor finishing they might have been more than 1-0 up. “There were positives other than the fact that we didn't take our chances,” he said. “I acknowledge that we lost, but I must remain fair.
“The level we had at stages was exceptionally high. This is the reality. And I would not speak so positively if it was untrue. But that’s why, when it comes to wins, I mentioned it's a repeating pattern. For that reason I said that we are really close to a shift in fortunes. Currently: the fine margins.”
“I saw a lot of encouraging signs that we did, as was the case today. However is sustaining it. My message would be different if I didn't believe it. This is why I am convinced we will manage to turn things around.”
Opposition Reaction Stance
The victorious boss refused to contemplate a championship push in spite of what seemed like a statement victory. “One match at a time, and we can really build up something here,” he said. “The faith in the group is immense.”
